Wiener Philharmoniker
Conducted by Valery Gergiev

Tchaikovsky
- Symphony No. 5 in E minor, Op. 64

Tchaikovsky
Symphony No. 5

- Written in 1885, the Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony is a perfect example of the emotive flavour for which Tchaikovsky became renowned. Its frequent moods of depression are contrasted with highly emotional climaxes that have been described as having a sense of “hysteria.”

The incredible energy that Gergiev brings to this symphony was witnessed at the live performance he gave at the Salzburg Festival in the summer of 1998 (from which this recording was taken).

- Gergiev’s début recording with the Vienna Philharmonic is certain to be a milestone in his formidable discography.

- Valery Gergiev has been hailed as the most charismatic conductor of our day. Director of the Mariinsky Theatre and described in the press as “the one-man powerhouse who re-invented the Kirov opera,” Valery is also principal conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and principal guest conductor of the Metropolitan Opera.
